Culture
As well as being an industrial and tourist center, Odessa is
also a center of higher learning and scientific research. The city’s educational
establishments include the University of Odessa, Medical University, Marine
Academy and Conservatory.
The people of Odessa are rightfully proud of their city’s unique
architectural and cultural heritage. Amongst many of Odessa’s fine examples of
architectural splendor are the University building built in 1865, the Opera
House (1898), The Local Lore Museum (1825), City Library (1830), Astronomic
Observatory (1871) and the Picture Gallery (1898).
Odessa can be called an open air museum. Its palace ensembles,
monuments, bridges and parks were created by some of the finest
architects in history. These architects drew on the experience of the
Mediterranean cultures of antiquity to create a city of monumental
splendor. Many of the city’s structures reflect a multitude of
architectural styles that range from Renaissance to Art Novo.
